World cup Teams

A total of 200 teams entered the race for one of the 31 places at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. As the host nation, South Africa qualifies automatically for the tournament. (SA football team is called "Bafana Bafana"). However, South Africa is the first host since 1934 to participate in World Cup qualifiers. This is because the CAF qualifiers also serve as the qualifying tournament for the 2010 African Cup of Nations, for which South Africa had to qualify separately. Like the previous tournament, the defending champions Italy do not qualify automatically.

The following teams have qualified for world cup 2010. Click on the 'calendar' icon to check out the matches schedule.

Soccer World Cup 2010 Qualifications
The FIFA world cup qualification matches start 2 years before the world cup the qualification process starts. Teams play qualification matches to determine who will be selected for the group stage matches. Two teams from each group (winners and runners up) then qualify for the round of 16. Standnigs in the group are decided by point system. If two or more teams have equal points their head to head record is evaluated. If that too fails to break the tie head-to-head goal difference, head-to-head goals scored, overall goal difference, and overall goals scored come nto play (in this order of priority). If still the tie remains then a play off match takes place. Each group winner then faces a runner in the last 16.
This are knock out games in which a tie after normal time will result in two halves of extra-time of 15 minutes each, and then a penalty shootout. In the shootout, each team gets 5 kicks. If neither team misses, then they enter into a sudden-death shootout, where the first team to miss loses.

World Cup Format
After the world cup qualified teams are decided there will be a draw, and the 32 FIFA qualified teams will be put in 4 pots, according to FIFA rankings. The exception to this is the draw host team (always seeded in Pot 1 this time South Africa, along with the 7 best teams). Groups are then created with each group featuring one team randomly selected from each pot. The group (and thus the venues) for the host team are usually not randomly drawn, but chosen. The host team plays their group matches in the capital city usually.
The preliminary draw for the 2010 World Cup was held in Durban, South Africa, on 25 November 2007. The first qualification matches were played on 25 August 2007 and qualification is scheduled to conclude on 18 November 2009. The Final draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup will be staged in Cape Town, South Africa, on 4 December 2009 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
